‘Abaribe’s call for Buhari’s resignation act of political rascality’

From Rasaq Ibrahim, Ado-Ekiti

The Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged Nigerians to ignore the call by Senate Minority Leader Enyinnaya Abaribe for President Muhammadu Buhari to resign.

The senator had accused the President of inability to tackle insecurity across the country.

But APC described Abaribe’s comment as an act of political rascality and one that lacked rational thinking.

The party stressed that kidnapping, bombing and various forms of killing associated with insurgency and banditry predated President Buhari’s government.

Abaribe, representing Abia South, during a debate on a motion presented by Senate Leader Yahaya Abdullahi on the rising security challenges in the country, said the APC-led government had disappointed Nigerians and that those at the helms of affairs, particularly President Buhari, should resign.

Ekiti State APC Chairman Paul Omotoso said there was no basis for President Buhari to resign.

He noted that “premature” and “mischievous” statement did not represent the general opinion of Nigerians who trust the President’s purposeful leadership.

Omotoso spoke at Saint James’ Anglican Church, Imesi Ekiti, in Gbonyin Local Government Area, during the burial rites of her mother, Mrs Comfort Osanyinteye Omotoso, who died on September 6, 2019.

She was 85.

The APC chairman said though there were still some challenges in the country, President Buhari had performed creditably well to the admiration of Nigerians.

He said: “It is laughable and disheartening for a ranking senator like Abaribe to call for President Buhari’s resignation. He should be joking. Has he forgotten the country was on the brinks of collapse before President Buhari took over?

“The level of insecurity was alarming. The Boko Haram insurgents were operating unchecked to the extent of seizing scathes of territory, mostly in Borno State.

“But today, no local government area in Borno State is under the siege of the dreadful Boko Haram insurgents that displaced over 2 million Nigerians from their towns and villages and resulted in the death of over 200,000 innocent Nigerians.”
