Anambra doctors suspend strike

By Emma Elekwa, Onitsha

Striking doctors in Anambra State have suspended their four-week industrial action.

The doctors, under the auspices of the Conference of Civil Service Doctors (CCSD), said the suspension was informed by outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Chairman Dr. Livinus Chukwuma, who addressed reporters in Onitsha, said they called off the strike in line with the oath they swore to uphold the health of the people.

He described the decision as a worthy sacrifice in view of the seriousness of the disease.

“Considering the outbreak of Coronavirus, the Civil Service Doctors in Anambra State feel that it is a mark of dishonor to the people of the state to remain on strike while they are facing the looming danger.

“The scare of the eventual outcome will be indelible in the minds of the public and the doctors too. In line with the oath we swore to uphold the health of our people, the doctors have decided to suspend the strike so that we can be combat-ready for the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is a sacrifice expected of us and must be made.”

Chukwuma urged the government to take advantage of the period to finetune its actions towards finding a last solution to the crises.

“All doctors are to be at their places of work today, not later than 08:00hours. It’s our hope that the government will utilise the time to finetune its actions towards a lasting solution to the lingering issues with the doctors,” he added.
