Astronauts' blood reveals – the universe is very dangerous to humans

In particular, scientists have identified potential threats to people coming from space, and have found evidence in the blood of astronauts.

The blood tests of 11 astronauts (nine men and two women) who spent an average of six months at the International Space Station showed something very strange – how low gravity can stop blood flow and even cause a reverse flow, writes Big Think.

The situation was particularly disturbed with the upper body of people living in space. Implications for long-term health are still under study, but this risk appears to be joining the list of risks already recognized by space – weight loss and increased bone fragility.

Ultrasound assessments revealed that around the 50th day of the mission, seven crew members had stopped the flow of blood from the inner artery, the largest neck artery, which circulates blood from the carotid artery supply area. Its function is to collect blood from the brain to the face and neck, and some astronauts have tried reverse blood flow.

The dangers of being in space for too long

One astronaut also developed an artery clot while still in flight, and another faced a blood clot as it landed on Earth.

Confronting blood flow eventually does not sound desirable, and this discovery creates additional alerts about the dangers of long-term space travel.

One of the study's leaders, Michael Stenger from NASA's lab at the Space Center in Houston, called the discovery “unexpected”.

“We didn't even suspect that there might be a halt to circulation and reverse flow, that's abnormal. On Earth, we would immediately suspect a major blockage or a tumor, “he said.

Stenger attributes this to the lack of gravity, pointing out the importance of observing physiological changes in astronauts for many years to accurately determine the long-term effects of space exposure on human health.

“Some astronauts have swollen faces, as it does not matter to attract fluid that circulates in the upper body. Sometimes you can have arteries that appear in your neck or head area, especially on bald astronauts, ”says Stegner.

He cites stopping blood flow as the most disturbing aspect of the discovery, saying it resulted in potentially fatal thrombus formation. But in terms of the research itself, scientists also see it as an opportunity to anticipate risks and develop new treatments.
