Auditor Decides: Trump broke the law when he suspended military aid to Ukraine

The White House “broke” US law when it suspended military aid for Ukraine, an independent government-controlled body decided, touching on issues at the center of President Donald Trump's recall process.

“The Government Accountability Office (GAO) today announced an official decision” stating that the White House's budget policy services “violated the law by retaining about $ 214 million allocated to the Ministry of Defense for military assistance to Ukraine,” the GAO said.

Trump charged with abuse of power

On December 18, Donald Trump was formally charged with abuse of power in the House of Representatives.

He is accused of freezing important military aid to Kiev in order to get his Ukrainian counterpart to investigate his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, who is most likely to compete with him in the White House race this November.

The GAO released the report ahead of the U.S. Senate's recall, and it is a blow to the White House's efforts to justify last year's move by President Trump.

“Faithful law enforcement does not allow the president to replace the laws passed by Congress with the priorities of his own policy,” GAO states.

Trump has withheld $ 391 million, a sum voted by Congress as military assistance to Ukraine in the fight against pro-Russian rebels in the country's east. After temporary restraint, the money was finally paid to Ukraine in September, but the scandal has spread.

The recall continues

After the indictment was confirmed in the lower house of Congress, the recall process, the so-called 'trial', continues in the Senate where Trump's Republicans have a majority.

Members of the House of Representatives play the role of 'prosecutor', the White House has legal representatives, senators are jurors, and the Supreme Court's chairman presides over the process.

The president may be removed from office if two-thirds of the senators out of 100 vote in favor.

However, the Senate is expected to release Trump since none of the 53 Republican senators publicly said he was in favor of the recall.

Still, the recall last month voted for by the House of Representatives and the televised Senate trial could be embarrassing for Trump, who is running for a second term in the Nov. 3 election, with Joe Biden as his most likely Democratic counterpart.
