British ambassador arrested in Tehran

The British Foreign Ministry has confirmed that the Iranian authorities have briefly detained the ambassador of that country in Tehran, condemning the detention as a “gross violation of international law”.

“The arrest of our ambassador in Tehran without cause and explanation is a gross violation of international law,” British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab said in a statement. Noting that the Iranian government is at a turning point, he also said that it could continue to walk toward pariah status with all the political and economic isolation it entails or take steps to ease tensions and engage in a diplomatic path forward.

He was in custody for several hours

Earlier, Tehran news agency Tasnim reported that British Ambassador Rob Macaire was arrested outside Amir Kabir University and detained for several hours for inciting anti-government protesters.

Iranian police on Saturday dispelled students who were shouting “radical” slogans in Tehran at a rally organized to commemorate the victims of a Ukrainian plane that Iran crashed with a “mistake” on Wednesday, Iran's Fars news agency reported.

Reporters from the French news agency France Pressea reported that hundreds of students had gathered on Saturday evening in response to a call to pay tribute to the victims of the disaster that killed all 176 passengers and crew, mostly Iranians and Canadians, some of whom had dual citizenship.

A rally at the renowned Amir Kabir University in Tehran has turned into an outburst of anger. The crowd shouted slogans against “liars” and sought the prosecution of those responsible for the accident and those who, in their view, wanted to hide it.
