Chelsea Manning ended up in hospital, tried to kill herself in prison

Former US military intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning, convicted of stealing classified documents and handing them over to WikiLeaks, is recovering at the hospital from a suicide attempt, CNN reported.

Manning has been in custody since May

Manning has been in custody since May after she refused to testify about the handing over of confidential documents to WikiLeaks in 2010. In addition to being in custody, she was also fined $ 1,000 a day, which now stands at nearly half a million dollars.

“Chelsea Manning tried to commit suicide. She was taken to a hospital, where she is now recovering,” her lawyer's team said in a statement.

Manning spent nearly seven years in a U.S. military prison

Recall, Manning was convicted in 2013 of stealing millions of documents from the State Department, as well as a confidential video showing a US helicopter attacking civilians and journalists in Iraq in 2007.

She refused to testify in the WikiLeaks investigation and ended up in custody again

President Barack Obama reversed her sentence and served almost seven years in military prison until she was released in May 2017. But as the investigation into WikiLeaks continued, she declined to testify because she said she had already done so during the 2013 trial. Therefore, she ended up in custody again.

“Manning has said earlier that she will not give up her principles even if it is hard to hurt her. Her actions today testify to the strength of her beliefs,” her lawyer's team said in a statement.
