Dare gets draft policy document

By Chinyere Okoroafor

The Sports Industry Working Group (SIWG) committee has handed over the National Sports Industry Policy (NSIP) draft document to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare.

SIWG committee includes Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Dare said the draft policy would bring in transformation to the sports industry.

Praising the committee’s collaborative spirit, he said “I want to assure Nigerians that this work will stand the test of time and provide the needed transformation for our sports industry. Our work is not done yet.

“For the remaining steps, we must work together. The reviewed sports draft will bring about a new dawn and help move sports from being wholly recreational to being a business,” he said.

Permanent Secretary in the ministry Mr. Gabriel Aduda, who applauded SIWG’s effort, said the draft, which could be viewed on www.nesgroup.org/nsip, would be taken through validation processes before a Federal Executive Council (FEC) approval.

Dr. Ikenna Nwosu, a facilitator at the Tourism, Hospitality, Entertainment, Creatives and Sports as a Business (THECS) Policy Commission of NESG, said the initiative was a public-private dialogue towards opening the sports sector to new revenue streams.

Head of Sports Industry Thematic Group in NESG Mrs. Nkechi Obi said it took three years of consultations to obtain the best policy draft for the industry.
