Democrats win Hong Kong election: “This is a democratic tsunami”

DEMOCRATIC candidates in Hong Kong have won an overwhelming majority in local elections, which saw a record number of voters after six months of anti-government protests, increasing pressure on weakened city leader Carrie Lam to listen to pro-democracy demands.

The boss wants a calm and secure situation

Democrats across the city of 7.4 million people secured close to 90 percent of the seats in the 452-member council, RTHK reported, despite financially strong pro-election candidates.

This is the first election since the launch of the pro-democracy demonstration in June, marked by a record turnout. Turnout exceeded 70 percent, the election commission said, significantly higher than the 2015 election when it was 47 percent. The elections were peaceful.

Lam said the government respects the results and wants a peaceful and secure situation.

“There are different analyzes and interpretations in the community regarding the results, and a good number of people find that they reflect citizens' dissatisfaction with the current situation and deep-rooted problems in society,” she said.

“Victory for Hong Kong Residents”

“This is the power of democracy. This is the democratic tsunami,” said Tommy Cheung, a former student protest leader who won a seat in Yuen Long district, near the Chinese border.

Among the winners is the Civil Front for Human Rights candidate who organized some anti-government rallies, Jimmy Sham, who said the turnout should be a signal to the government that their voices should be listened to.

“This is a win for Hong Kong residents,” said Sham, who was beaten up last month.

Severe defeat of the main pro-Chinese party

The largest pro-China party suffered a severe defeat as it lost more than 100 of its 182 candidates.

Voters chose from 1104 candidates for 452 seats in the city's local government. City councils control specific spending and decide on a range of life-related issues, such as transportation, and serve as an important basic platform for expanding political influence in a communist-dominated city.

Ever since the UK returned Hong Kong to China in 1997, this special administrative region has been operating on a “one country, two systems” principle. This gives the city self-government and various freedoms, including limited electoral rights.

The city leader can only be nominated and elected by a committee that has 1200 members, mostly pro-Chinese elites.

The opposition is trying to get the Chinese government to respect the full democracy they say has been promised by the Basic Law, the city's mini-constitution that gives residents the right to choose their own leader.
