Deutsche Telekom suspends all 5G deals until German decision on Huawei

DEUTSCHE TELEKOM has announced that it is suspending all business operations related to next-generation mobile networks until Germany decides on potential security risks related to Chinese equipment supplier Huawei.

“Given the unclear political situation, we are currently not contracting with any vendor on the 5G network. We are currently informing all vendors of this decision,” Deutsche Telekom said.

Cyber ​​espionage

The German giant has established a 5G network in several German cities, launching a pilot project in Berlin in collaboration with Huawei. It plans to expand the network to 20 German cities next year.

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) MPs of Chancellor Angela Merkel have rebelled against a bill that does not ban any suppliers but only technology checks and management of all companies.

In doing so, they have accepted the US view that Huawei's equipment, a leading market company, exposes cyber espionage networks to “small doors”. Washington also emphasizes that Huawei is required by law to protect the interests of the Chinese state. Huawei denies it.

“We hope that the political situation will be clarified as soon as possible when it comes to building a 5G network in Germany so that we do not fall behind,” said Deutsche Telekom.
