EU and China urge US and Iran to end conflict and dialogue

The EUROPEAN UNION and China on Wednesday called on the US and Iran to end the conflict and dialogue after Iranian missile attacks on US targets in Iraq.

“Weapons use should be stopped immediately to open up space for dialogue,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told reporters before leaving for London to discuss the situation in the Middle East with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

“We are called upon to do everything possible to open negotiations. We have established proven links with many actors in the region and beyond to de-escalate the situation,” Von der Leyen said.

Iranian state television reported that Iran had fired 15 rockets at US targets in Iraq on Wednesday in retaliation for the killing of Kasim Suleimani. The U.S. military has confirmed that at least two Iraqi bases where U.S.-led military personnel are stationed have been hit.

China has criticized the US

“The deterioration of the situation in the Middle East is not in the interest of either side,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Wednesday, reiterating his call for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

China has criticized the US for provoking tensions in the Middle East. The US is accused in the editorial of China Daily of creating a “boiler of tensions” in the region.

China is in close contact with relevant parties in the UN Security Council, Geng said when asked if China is helping to resolve the conflict.
