Governors helpless on insecurity, says El-Rufai

By Tajudeen Adebanjo

Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai on Monday spoke on two burning issues in the country – insecurity and zoning of presidential candidate by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He lamented rising insecurity in the country, especially in the North, saying that governors were helpless and frustrated.

The governor canvassed the need for the National Police Council (NPC) to meet regularly, adding that the council has constitutional backing to solve the security challenges.

He spoke in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in an interview aired on Channels Television.

According to him, the recent #EndSARS protest by youths against police brutality exposed the inability of the governors, despite being called the chief security officers of their states.

He said: “We are all frustrated. I am frustrated in my state; many governors are frustrated in their states; we are called chief security officers only in name; we have no control over the army and the police. We are almost helpless. We don’t have a say in police operations, yet we fund some of their operations in our states.

“Some of us have more influence than others, but to a large extent, you ask the commissioner of police to do something and he has to clear with the Inspector-General of Police; this is the reality.

“We are not in control of the police, I don’t determine who gets posted to my state as Commissioner of Police and if I give him directives, he can decide to flout the directives. So, we are all frustrated.”

On zoning of the APC’s presidential candidate, el-Rufai said the party should honour the agreement made to return the presidency to the South.

It would be recalled that Works and Housing Minister Babatunde Fashola and his Transportation counterpart Rotimi Amaechi, have urged the party to respect its zoning formula in picking presidential candidate for the 2023 elections.

The Kaduna State governor said though he was against zoning, but the agreement must be honoured.

“Personally, I’m against zoning. No country makes progress through it. I don’t practise it because I want the most competent person to occupy the position. However, I believe that, as a party, after eight years of President Muhammadu Buhari, we should honour the informal agreement of ensuring that power should go to the south and I support that. We have a gentleman agreement on it. Though, our party has not taken any decision on it as far as I know,” he said.
