Greta Thunberg Receives “Alternative Nobel”

The Right Livelihood Award, named the “Alternative Nobel Prize”, was presented today at a ceremony in Stockholm, with climate activist Greta Thunberg among the winners.

Thunberg was awarded for “inspiring and empowering political demands for urgent action on climate change, based on scientific facts,” the jury awarded the award said.

Thunberg could not attend the event, so she said in a video message: “The fight goes on, we will never stop.”

She recorded the message in Lisbon, arriving on Tuesday after a three-week trip to the Atlantic, refusing to fly planes because they are harmful to the environment. Thunberg is on his way to Madrid to host the United Nations Climate Conference.

School strike begins

In August 2018, a 16-year-old Swede began a “school strike” in front of the Swedish parliament. This event inspired the protests of high school students around the world.

She is the “John of Orleans Climate,” Johan Rockstrom, head of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Affairs, said of Thunberg.

In addition, Western Sahara activist Aminatou Haidar and Brazilian native activist Davi Kopenawa were honored. The four winners will receive around € 94,000 in prizes.

Protection of the Amazon rainforest

Haidar has been advocating the independence of Western Sahara for over 30 years, a territory that Morocco has occupied since 1975.

In her speech, she criticized countries such as Spain and international bodies such as the UN and the EU for not helping the Sahrawi people.

Kopenawa, a member of the Yanomami tribe, was rewarded with the Hutukara Yanomami organization for protecting the Amazon rainforest.

The fourth recipient of the award is Chinese lawyer Guo Jianmei, for her “pioneering and persistent work” on women's rights in China.

Since 1995, she and her associates have provided free legal advice to over 120,000 women.
