Guatemala breaks all diplomatic ties with the Venezuelan government

NEW Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei has announced that he is breaking his country's diplomatic ties with the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

“We are irrevocably severing ties with the government in Venezuela,” the president told reporters ahead of a meeting with Secretary General of the Organization of the United States (OAS) Luis Almagro at the government building.

The new right-wing president, who took office Tuesday, said the break was irrevocable and that Foreign Minister Pedro Brolo had been instructed to leave Maduro's diplomatic representative in the Guatemalan capital.

Following the announcement of the decision, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza said Giammattei is bowing to US President Donald Trump.

“His government is sure to be another crappy joke that will be forgotten,” Arreaza wrote on Twitter.

Guatemala is an active member of the Lima Group, spanning a dozen Latin American countries and Canada, and was founded in 2017 to find a solution to the crisis in Venezuela. The group recognizes Juan Guaido as interim Venezuelan president.
