Hong Kong police chief calls for peace ahead of major protest

HEAD OF POLICE IN HONG KONG urged citizens to protest peacefully ahead of Sunday's rally, which is expected to bring together a large number of people and which organizers say aims to show that their movement is not losing power.

Police have given the rare green light for a protest organized by the Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF), which is behind, for the most part, peaceful rallies in the summer.

“We hope that our citizens will show around the world that Hong Kong residents can hold large rallies in a prescribed and peaceful manner,” said new Police Chief Chris Tang before his visit to Beijing.

He is expected to meet senior officials of the Ministry of Public Security in the Chinese capital, after which he will return to the autonomous province ahead of Sunday's protest.

The weekend rally will be a key indicator of support for the pro-democracy movement after it recorded a landslide victory in last month's local elections.

“We want to tell Carrie Lem that the election results are not the end of the movement,” Eric Lai of the CHRF said, referring to the Hong Kong leader.

Protesters later Friday are planning a small protest against police use of tear gas, which they say is excessive and harming innocent bystanders. Police believe her use of force was restricted.

Hong Kong has been relatively quiet since the local elections, and the police chief expressed his hope that it would remain so.

But the volatility of that financial center of the world has left its mark on its economy, making the region record a recession for the first time in ten years.

Financial manager Paul Chan said on Friday that unrest had contributed from 2 percent to a 3.2 percent large GDP decline in the third quarter of this year.
