Indonesia exempts state exams, affecting more than 8 million high school students

INDONESIA has canceled national exams amid concerns about the spread of coronaviruses, and the move will hit more than eight million high school students, Education Minister Nadiem Makarim said today.

The decision came after the country in the Southeast Asia announced the largest daily increase in cases of coronaviruses, so that now a total of 686 people are infected and 55 have died.

“The most important are the safety and health of our students and their families,” Makarim said.

A state of emergency has been declared in the capital

National exams were to be held in two phases, beginning March 30 and April 20.

Part of the Indonesian provinces has already closed schools due to a coronavirus epidemic including West Java, the most populous province of nearly 50 million people, and the capital city of Jakarta, which has been declared a state of emergency.
