Iranian General: We did not intend to kill US troops in Iraq

A commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard said yesterday that the purpose of the January 8 attack on US targets in Iraq was not to kill enemy soldiers.

“Our goal was not to kill enemy soldiers. It didn't matter,” Major General Hosein Salami said at a closed session of the Iranian parliament, according to a video shown by state television.

“The objective was the material destruction caused by rocket firing because we wanted to show that we were superior to the enemy and that we could attack any point we chose,” added the commander-in-chief.

Revenge for the liquidation of Suleimani

On January 8, missiles were fired at two bases used by US forces in western and northern Iraq in retaliation for the liquidation of Gen. Kasem Suleimani, killed in a January 3 airstrike in Baghdad.

There were no casualties in these attacks.

General Salami was called to testify in parliament after Iran's armed forces admitted on Saturday that they accidentally crashed a Ukrainian civilian aircraft on Wednesday, just hours after Iran's missile launches in Iraq.

Replaced rocket aircraft

The commander of the Air Force claimed “full responsibility” for the destruction of the Ukrainian aircraft, explaining that the soldier had replaced the aircraft with a cruise missile and thus caused the fall of the Ukrainian Boeing 737, killing all 176 people.

Iran has invited foreign experts, in particular from Canada, the United States, Ukraine and France, to participate in the investigation.

“We did not touch or move the remains of the aircraft,” General Salami assured lawmakers.
