Iraqis have taken to the streets in major protests since the Saddam regime

Tens of thousands of Iraqis gathered in downtown Baghdad today demanding the departure of the political elite, and this was the day of the largest anti-government protests since the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime.

Five people have died from injuries sustained overnight after security forces threw tear gas at protesters who camped in Tahrir's central Baghdad Square and targeted them with rubber bullets. At least 103 people were injured, police and hospital sources said.

In the last month, 250 people have been killed

Protests in which 250 people have been killed in the last month have intensified dramatically in recent days and huge masses of people have taken to the streets demanding the departure of the ruling, who have been in power since 2003. By noon, tens of thousands have come to the square.

In Baghdad and cities in southern Iraq, a country divided by sectarian and ethnic groups, protesters warn against agreeing to anything other than the departure of an entire political class they hold incompetent and corrupt.

Riots triggered by the difficult economic situation and systemic corruption erupted after nearly two years of relative stability in Iraq, which experienced foreign occupation, civil war and fighting with the Islamic State from 2003 to 2017.
