Italy allows 213 migrants aboard, including pregnant women

A HUMANITARIAN ship in the Mediterranean Sea with 213 migrants was allowed by the Italian authorities to dock at the Italian port due to bad weather conditions.

The SOS Méditerranée charity said on Saturday that the Ocean Viking ship had been granted permission to enter the port of Messina in northeast Sicily.

The ship rescued 215 migrants last week. A pregnant woman awaiting twins and a man were transported by helicopter.

An additional 73 people were found last week by the Spanish non-governmental organization Open Arms.

For now, it is unknown where and when the Open Arms ship of the same name will land.

Both non-governmental ships often seek permission to land in Italy or Malta.

These two countries usually open their ports only if they reach an agreement to deploy migrants to other EU Member States.

Until such agreements are reached, migrants wait on board. The negotiations are mainly coordinated by the European Commission.

A ten-meter-long, overcrowded vessel has been waiting about two kilometers from the Italian island of Lampedusa since Saturday.

According to the Italian Coast Guard, 149 people, including three children, have been rescued so far, and it is unknown if any are missing.
