London airport opened after the arrest of environmental activists

Britain's busiest Heathrow airport announced today it was “fully operational” after police arrested suspected environmental activists who planned to disrupt port traffic by releasing drones.

“Our runways remain open and fully operational, despite attempts to obstruct their work through the illegal use of drones,” Heathrow Airport wrote on Twitter.

London police said they had arrested two men outside the airport today on suspicion of “conspiracy to violate public order in connection with Heathrow airport activities”.

The ban on gathering applies to the airport and surrounding areas to prevent criminal activity that poses a significant security risk to the airport, police said.

Seven more people were arrested yesterday

It was also reported that, in addition to the two arrested at the airport today, seven other suspects were arrested yesterday.

The Heathrow Pause Group said it wanted to disrupt flights as “a response to a lack of constructive progress in government work, in light of a May 1 parliamentary decision announcing a climate and environmental alert.”

The airport “used signal jamming to disrupt early drone flights,” the group wrote on Twitter.

Police said they arrested seven other suspects yesterday on the same basis as the two arrested at the airport.
