Lufthansa seeks state aid for coronaviruses

German airline Lufthansa has announced its intention to seek help from several European countries to overcome the effects of the coronavirus epidemic.

The company says it is negotiating with the governments of the countries in which its subsidiaries are based.

“Lufthansa will contact the home market governments to help it with liquidity,” a company spokesman told Reuters.

In doing so, he confirmed the report by Handelsblatt, which released the information today, referring to a video message from CEO Carsten Spohr to workers, Reuters recalls.

The German carrier is the owner of Swiss International, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines, the agency recalls.

Spohr will participate in today's meeting of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and several leaders of the airline sector on coronavirus, an unnamed source told Reuters.
