Mexico claims to fight the drug cartel, does not want US assistance

MEXICAN President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said his government is committed to fighting organized crime, trying to dispel fears that the United States might take matters into its own hands in the fight against drug cartels.

US President Donald Trump said this week that he intends to declare Mexican cartels terrorist groups so he can impose sanctions on them.

Mexicans fear US intervention

Although this does not give the U.S. direct authority for military operations in Mexico, many Mexicans fear that their northern neighbor might use this as an excuse for unilateral intervention.

Lopez Obrador retorted that he would not allow armed foreign intervention for a hundred years after his last invasion of his country, arguing that his government was doing everything it could to combat criminal gangs.

“Armed parties cannot intervene in our territory,” he said, offering instead to cooperate with the United States after a series of recent clashes between drug cartels, security forces and civilians showed the power of gangs.

The government of Lopez Obrador claims that its priority is to prevent the flow of money to drug cartels, prevent money laundering and stop the smuggling of weapons to Mexico from the United States.

The Mexican Treasury Department has frozen the accounts of 771 people and 1,057 companies, blocking a total of $ 274 million, it was announced.

Trump offered military assistance

Mexican officials have held several meetings with US counterparts to agree on how to stop weapons smuggling, the statement said, adding that “satisfactory” progress has already been made.

Trump has repeatedly offered military assistance to combat drug trafficking, something Lopez Obrador has refused every time, even after the slaughter of an American-Mexican family earlier this month.

US Secretary of the Interior William Barr will visit Mexico next week to discuss co-operation, said Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.
