More than 3,500 Central American migrants are moving to the United States

More than 3,500 Central American migrants seeking U.S. homes came to Guatemala today, Reuters reports.

Migrants move in so-called caravans, large groups, as the US pressures on Mexico and Guatemala. Specifically, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned the two countries to prevent migrants from reaching the US-Mexico border.

The migrants arranged a reunion before moving to Mexico

Migrants traveling in small groups of about ten people or in so-called caravans with more than 100 people claim to meet in Tecun Uman, Guatemala before moving to Mexico.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said his government is monitoring the situation. Lopez Obrador did not say whether Mexico would try to keep people south of the country.

Most Central American citizens are fleeing their homes because of violence and poverty, and want to get to the United States at all costs. Under U.S. pressure, Mexico's security forces are trying to break up larger groups moving north and wanting to cross the border.

There are now about 3500 people in Guatemala

Around 1,000 migrants arrived in Guatemala this Tuesday, with local authorities returning some of them to the border with Honduras to fill out the necessary documentation.

“We have not returned people from Guatemala and there are now about 3500 people crossing our border,” said Alejandra Mena, a spokeswoman for the Institute of Migration in Guatemala. At least 600 migrants from Honduras spend the night Thursday to Friday in Guatemala City sleeping in tents.

Otherwise, former Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales agreed last July with the United States to introduce measures aimed at stopping the arrival of asylum seekers from Honduras and El Salvador to the country. Guatemala's new president, Alejandro Giammattei, said his priority was to revisit the text of the migrant agreement with the US.
