NASA: Two large asteroids will be blowing near Earth tonight

TWO relatively large asteroids will hit the Earth on September 14, but we need not worry because all their orbit calculations have ruled out any threat to our planet, NASA reported.

“We've been tracking these asteroids for some time now and know their trajectory. One we've been tracking since 2000 and the other since 2010,” said Lindley Johnson, executive director of NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office.

“Both asteroids will travel past our planet 14 months from Earth, or 6.5 million kilometers away. Small asteroids pass this close to Earth every now and then,” he added.

Why are they said to pass near Earth?

Asteroid 2010 C01 is a near-Earth object (NEO), measuring between 120 and 260 meters in size, and will hit us on September 14th at 5:42 am. The second NEO facility, called the 2000 QW7, is between 290 and 650 meters in size, and will pass by several hours after the first one at 1:54 PM.

Although they will pass at a safe distance, both asteroids are categorized into objects passing near Earth. Namely, NEO bodies are considered to be all those asteroids or comets orbiting the Sun, sometimes traversing our neighborhood, or within 48 million kilometers of Earth.

By early 2019, more than 19,000 NEO objects had been discovered, with an average of 30 more such space bodies being discovered each week.
