NDDC: Akpabio, IMC get kudos

Bisi Olaniyi, South South Bureau Chief

NIGER Delta Watchdog for Good Governance and United Peoples  Front have hailed Minister of Niger Delta Affairs Godswill Akpabio and the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for sanitising the commission.

In a statement on Monday, Niger Delta Watchdog for Good Governance, through its President, Peter Essien, and United Peoples Front, represented by its Coordinator, Basil BobManuel, condemned the baseless allegations against Akpabio and IMC.

They said the campaigns against Akpabio and NDDC’s Acting Managing Director Prof. Kemebradikumo Pondei and the IMC were to divert attention from the forensic audit ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The groups said: “Immediately Prof. Pondei made the announcement of an invitation to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for operatives of the anti-graft agency to join in the forensic audit of NDDC, frivilolous petitions were quickly being written against the IMC and calling for the removal of Senator Akpabio as minister of Niger Delta Affairs.

“It is obvious that the obvious petitions written by persons who are afraid that the outcome of the forensic audit of NDDC and the involvement of EFCC will make them to end in jail.

“With the ravaging COVID19 pandemic worldwide and the rising death figure in Nigeria, especially in Niger Delta, a responsive interventionist agency must commit resources to the fight, to prevent spread of the deadly coronavirus, thereby complementing efforts of the Federal Government.

“To claim that NDDC does not have the powers to intervene in the present COVID-19 crisis in Niger Delta is rather unpatriotic and heartless, in the petitioners’ desperation to waste the lives of innocent people … on the altar of politics.”

The groups urged critical stakeholders to avoid playing politics with matters of development and health of the people, thereby joining the IMC and ministry to make a difference in the region.

Ijaw Intellectual Advocates had accused the IMC of defrauding the people, allegedly under the guise of purchasing COVID-19 Personal Protective Equipment  (PPE) and sanitisers, through the award of contract to Signora Concepts Services Limited
