Obaseki pardons 173 inmates of correctional centres in Edo

Bisi Olaniyi, Southsouth Bureau Chief

Edo State governor,  Godwin Obaseki, has pardoned 173 inmates across correctional centres in the state in line with Federal Government’s directive to decongest the centres across the country as part of measures to contain the Coronavirus pandemic.

Obaseki’s administration also gave relief materials to the released inmates  to cushion the effects of COVID-19.

The freed inmates included 48 from Oko centre, 108 from old Benin centre,12 from Ubiaja centre and four from Auchi centre.

Controller of Nigeria Correctional Service, Edo command, Joseph Usendiah, while kicking off the release yesterday in Benin, said: “The best way to appreciate the special favour of the government is to ensure that none of you is found wanting again.

“Be law abiding and put into use all the training and skills acquired while in custody.

“The inmates who are still in custody must always bear in mind that pardon comes from God. So, patience, commitment to learning and reformation should be your watch words. Be hopeful in God.”

Usendiah also admonished residents of the state, especially the youths, to always shun violence and criminal activities, while meaningfully contributing to societal development.
