Ortom seeks fight against kidnapping

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has advised communities on intelligence gathering to help security agencies track and arrest kidnappers and other criminals.

He spoke yesterday at Tse-Aminde in Buruku Local Government during a funeral oration at the burial of Justice Joseph Tine Tur, Justice of the Appeal Court, Makurdi Division.

The governor, who described kidnapping as an epidemic that had sent many to their early graves, said the deceased would have lived longer but for the trauma inflicted on him by the kidnap of his wife and sister about a year ago.

Ortom stressed that all must join hands to fight the menace and other crimes.

He said Justice Tur is gone, but he would be remembered for his good work, adding that he would be remembered for his passion for God, compassion for humanity and the value he added to the judiciary.

The governor described the late jurist as a committed and dedicated adjudicator, who remained unwavering even when his wife and sister were kidnapped and he became ill.

The President, Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, represented by Justice Jumai Sankey, said she received the news of Justice Tur’s death with shock.

She said Justice Tur’s death has robbed the judiciary of a great legal icon and an astute adjudicator.

Bishop Nathan Nyom of the Anglican Diocese of Makurdi enjoined people to think of when they would die.

He said: “It is better to die in the Lord than die as a sinner.”
