Pope Francis: The Vatican will receive and care for another 43 migrants from Lesbos

Vatican, according to Pope Francis' order, will receive 43 more migrants from a reception center on the Greek island of Lesbos, the Holy See announced today.

These will be taken care of in Rome by the Catholic charity Sant'Egidio.

The Pontifical Almighty Cardinal Konrad Krajewski left for Lesbos and will return to Rome with 33 refugees on Wednesday, with the remaining ten arriving later in December.

Camps overcrowded

The twelve Syrians brought by the Pope after his visit to Lesbos in April 2016 are the first refugees the Vatican has taken care of in Rome.

Nine more came in June 2016.

The situation at Camp Moria on Lesbos and other Greek reception centers has long been critical of overcrowding.

There are tens of thousands of people there, and many, including children, self-injure and commit suicide, the Doctors Without Borders charity recently announced.

In 2017, Pope Francis compared refugee centers in Lesbos to concentration camps.
