Putin: Russia can beat coronavirus in less than three months

RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that the country could defeat the coronavirus in less than three months if it quickly introduced harsh measures, after authorities already decided to suspend all flights to and from Russia as of Friday.

Authorities in Moscow have announced that they will close all stores except food and drug stores this weekend.

Russia recorded the largest increase in the number of infected people in a single day on Thursday, with a total of 840.

This is still much less than in other European countries, but the Moscow mayor told Putin on Tuesday that the number of people actually infected far exceeds official figures.

“We will definitely get out of this situation … I hope it happens in two, three months,” Putin said at a meeting with entrepreneurs.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported that 16 centers for the sick were being built, that the first would be completed by March 30 and the rest by May 16.

From March 28 to April 5, all stores and malls are closed, except pharmacies and food stores. Nor will restaurants and cafes work, the Moscow mayor announced.

The only exceptions to the flight ban will be Russian planes that will return Russian citizens and those with special permits from other countries, the government said.
