Rich people live without health problems for 10 years longer than the poor

Wealthy people live a healthy, pain-free life for an average of nine years longer than less affluent people, according to a study based on data from more than 25,000 people over 50 in the US and UK.

Researchers analyzed the data in search of factors that could predict how long people could live before they were troubled by age-related pain, such as being unable to get out of bed or prepare food for themselves.

The biggest socioeconomic factor to predict the onset of these problems is wealth, the researchers found. At 50, the richest people surveyed can expect another 31 healthy years, while the least wealthy can expect only 22 or 23 more years of good health.

Number of years in good health

Most research so far has focused on life expectancy rather than its quality. “By measuring the healthy life expectancy, we can estimate the number of years of life that will be spent in good health or without disability,” said researcher Paola Zaninotto, a public health specialist at University College London.

For example, a study found that the risk of premature death doubles in the poorer parts of the UK compared to the wealthier parts.

In terms of longevity, a 2016 survey found that men who are among the 1% richest in the U.S. by financial criteria can expect to live 87.3 years, nearly 15 years longer than those who belong among the poorest 1 percent. In women, this gap is 10 years. As for the UK, according to a 2018 survey, poor people will die about ten years earlier than those of well-to-do.

The latest survey included data from two studies, one from the UK, which involved 10,754 people and the other from the US, with 14,803 respondents. There were no significant differences between the two countries in terms of key research findings. Inequalities in life expectancy exist in both countries and are similar in magnitude.

The World Health Organization holds that the global life expectancy is 72 years for those born in 2016. The average has increased by 5.5 years between 2000 and 2016, which is the fastest growth since the 1960s, according to WHO.
