Russia and China urge UN to lift sanctions on coronavirus

RUSSIA, China and six other countries have called on the UN to lift trade sanctions that could interfere with the fight against the new coronavirus, Russian state media reported on Thursday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to speak at an emergency video conference the same day with colleagues from a group of 20 leading economies on how to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

In a joint letter, Russia, China, Iran, Syria, Cuba, Nicaragua, North Korea and Venezuela are calling on the UN to “reject unilateral coercive measures,” state-run TASS news agency reported.

“We cannot allow political calculations to stand in the way of saving lives,” a letter sent to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said.

The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted trade around the world, especially straining commodity economies like Russia, whose ruble has lost more than a tenth of its value against the US dollar this month.
