Russia expects progress on peace talks on Libya

RUSSIAN Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today that he hoped the conference on Libya, to be held in Berlin this Sunday, would result in progress towards resolving the conflict.

An agreement in line with the UN Security Council's position has been virtually agreed, Lavrov said.

“The most important thing is to monitor the ceasefire,” he added at a news conference in Moscow, describing the ceasefire as “an important step forward.”

The situation in Libya

The conference, hosted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, will take place on Sunday. The aim of the conference is to consolidate the agreement, which entered into force last weekend.

There has been no strong central government in Libya since 2011, when longtime dictator Moamer Gaddafi was ousted.

Libya has two governments, a weak internationally recognized government in Tripoli led by Fajez al-Seraj and another in Tobruk supported by General Khalifa Haftar.

“Haftar agreed to a ceasefire in principle”

Peace talks between the warring parties in Moscow earlier this week did not end with Haftar signing a ceasefire agreement.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said after visiting Libya this week that Haftar had agreed to a ceasefire in principle “although it did not sign a ceasefire agreement”.
