Shocking revelation: How millions are being earned by the return of virginity to Muslim girls

It is believed that there are hundreds of girls who are forced to undergo an intimate procedure called hymenoplasty to prove that they are 'clean' on their first night of marriage.

More commonly known as hymen repair, surgery involves building a layer of skin at the entrance to the vagina that can be broken when a woman first has sex.

The operation takes less than an hour and is performed under local anesthetic.

A Sunday Times investigation revealed that there are at least 22 clinics offering this service privately, mostly in London.

One such clinic, the Gynae Center in Central London, recommends performing 'minor' surgery because the hymen is considered a sign of virginity and for cultural and religious reasons can be an important factor in a marriage. In many cases marriages are canceled if the girl does not appear clean.

Some private clinics charge up to £ 3,000 and attract patients with ads that promise surgery can “restore your innocence” and that the intervention is “100 percent safe”.

Human rights organizations have accused private clinics of deriving profits by exploiting patients' fears. Most are young Muslim women from Middle Eastern and Asian families who are pressured to be “untouched” when they get married. Extramarital sex is forbidden by the Koran.

The guidelines of the General Medical Council (GMC) require that before undertaking any procedure, clinics must obtain the consent of a patient, “consent that is not considered valid if given under pressure from another person”.

Dr Leila Frodsham, of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, says that hymen repair destroys myths about virginity. “I think people are surprised to learn that this is happening in the middle of London. There are a lot of people who make a lot of money from such vulnerable women, ”she says.

Mohammad Masood, director of MAS Gynecology, says the requirements for this procedure at his clinic have quadrupled since 2014.

He says the patients were usually found online and were almost all Muslims, who would be subject to stigma if they were found to be unmarried.

Halaleh Taheri, founder of the Middle East Woman's Organization, based in Finsbury Park, North London, says she has handled several cases of young women raised in the UK who felt they were entitled to having sex.

They were then forced into marriage by the family, under intense pressure. According to her, they are often contacted by the daughters' mothers, who ask her where her daughters can operate.

“They are often very scared that their father will find out,” says Taheri.

Aneeta Prem, founder of the Liria charity, says women are often afraid of being considered “second-hand goods”.

“It's a terrible practice, but I understand why women feel so pressured to have the surgery. Sometimes the consequences are very serious, ”says Prem, Shekulli reports.

'Virgin virginity repair' surgery is legal in the UK. Critics contend that the demand for surgery is based on the belief that the hymen is a “seal” that breaks down during sex.

Masood, meanwhile, denied claims that surgeons were raising money for fear of women and girls.

“I've seen tragic situations where I felt like I was saving a life. It's a very sad situation, “he said.
