The Boeing 777X, the largest passenger aircraft in the world, began a test flight

BOEING Co. has begun the test flight of its 777X, the world's largest twin-engine, at a time when the U.S. manufacturer, severely affected by the crisis of its 737 MAX aircraft, is stepping up its fight against European competitor Airbus.

The 777X, a larger, more efficient version of the successful Boeing 777 mini-jumbo, departed a commercial base near Seattle at 10:09 a.m. local time as strong winds forced the company to delay the trial flight twice this week.

Boeing executives have announced that the test flight will take between 3 and 5 hours and that testing and certification will take months before it becomes operational in the Emirates in 2021.

Boeing has previously announced that its largest twin-engine, designed for an average of 406 people, will take off for the first time in early 2020, with the first delivery expected in 2021. The first delivery was originally scheduled for mid-2020, which is not possible due to problems in development.

The test flight was scheduled for Thursday or Friday at a Boeing commercial base outside Seattle, but could not be realized due to inclement weather.

The longest passenger plane

This 77 meter long aircraft is significantly larger than its predecessors the 777-300ER and the Airbus A340-600. Even slightly longer than the previous record holder 747-8, the latest version of the Queen of the Skies aircraft.

Due to its length, the aircraft is designed to accommodate between 400 and 425 passengers, in two classes. The number of seats will vary depending on the requirements of certain airlines.

The world's longest-running passenger aircraft, the Boeing 777X, was officially unveiled to the Boeing Board of Directors in the company's main production facility in Everett, Washington, last March.

The official launch of the aircraft was simplified and held at the company's main production facility to pay tribute to the casualties of Boeing's 737 MAX 8.

The 737 MAX aircraft landed globally in March after two crashes that killed 346 people. The investigation found that software and sensors contributed to the crash because pilots could not control the planes.

The 777X was originally scheduled to perform its first test flight last summer, but has been delayed until 2020 due to problems with GE9X engines manufactured by General Electric. Problems emerged last September during the final load test when the aircraft door exploded.

The final aircraft load tests are subject to “loads and efforts that exceed normal operating loads” and are overseen by inspectors of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as part of the aircraft certification process, said after the incident.
