The 'mysterious underground cave' on Mars could contain life

“The hole, shown in representative color, appears to be an opening for an underground cave, partially illuminated in the image,” NASA wrote in a blog post. “Analysis of this and the accompanying images revealed the opening to be about 35 meters long, while the angle of the inner shadow indicates that the base cave is approximately 20 meters deep.”

The crater, located in the Pavonis Mons volcano, was first discovered when the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter took an image of it in 2011, transmits .

The crater “remains a matter of speculation” and scientists still do not know the full extent of the cave.

They say the cave could be a “relatively good candidate for Martian life improvement”, and a “prime target” for future exploration.

The March 2020 rover, which is scheduled to launch on July 17, will try to find out if there is any fossilized evidence of extraterrestrial beings in addition to other tasks.

Upon arrival on the Martian surface, on February 18, 2021, the rover will join functional Curiosity and the now-defunct Opportunity rover on the Red Planet. Unlike Curiosity, this rover will carry “the first helicopter to fly to another planet,” says NASA.

NASA's long-term goal is to send a manned mission to Mars in 2030. / /
