The US and 14 other countries are imposing a travel ban on Madura and its allies

FIFTEEN US countries have agreed to ban travel within their borders for 29 Venezuelans, including President Nicolas Maduro and his close allies, as part of diplomatic efforts to force him to resign.

Representatives of Argentina, Brazil, the United States, Colombia, Chile and Peru, signatories to the Inter-American Treaty on Mutual Assistance (TIAR), an agreement promising mutual defense of members of the Organization of American States (OAS), were yesterday at a meeting in Bogotá.

In September, the group accepted the identification, sanctioning and extradition of leading members of the Venezuelan government, who she said were linked to money laundering, drug trafficking and terrorism.

The list of people banned from traveling to 15 TIAR countries includes Maduro's most important allies, such as Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaz, Defense Minister Vladimir Padrin, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez and Diosdad Cabella, who is number 2 in the ruling Socialist Party.

Most Venezuelans go to Colombia

Some 500 Maduro-related people are already under different sanctions, said Julio Borges, who attended the meeting as a representative of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, who declared Maduro's 2018 re-election illegal. Guaido called for a constitution this year to take over the interim presidency. Most Western countries supported him as head of state.

Participating countries considered new measures to support the restoration of democracy and respect for human rights in Venezuela, said Colombian Foreign Minister Claudia Blum, as part of a strategy to stop migration from the country.

“There are no unilateral decisions or calls for the use of force at this meeting. There is only an open call for increased diplomatic pressure to be as effective as possible every time,” Colombian President Ivan Duque said.

Colombia is a major destination for Venezuelan migrants fleeing severe food and drug shortages and government violence. Nearly 1.5 million Venezuelans currently live in that Andean country.
