The US is imposing a visa ban on six other countries

The US has announced that it is expanding the number of countries whose citizens will not be able to obtain certain visas to enter their country, the BBC reports.

From now on, citizens of Nigeria, Eritrea, Sudan, Tanzania, Kyrgyzstan and Myanmar will not be allowed to obtain certain types of visas to enter the US. Citizens of these states will only be able to visit the United States as tourists.

By the way, in 2018, the US issued twice as many visas to Nigeria as to the other five countries, which are now banned. During 2018, the U.S. issued more than 8,000 immigration visas to Nigerian citizens. In the same year, 2000 visas were issued to Sudanese citizens and 290 Tanzanian and only 31 Eritrean nationals.

The ban is due to security breaches

The reason for the visa waiver lies in the fact that these countries did not comply with US security requirements and information sharing.

“Most of these countries want to be helpful, but for a combination of different reasons, they have simply not met the minimum requirements we have set,” Chad Wolf, the Minister of Homeland Security, told reporters today. He also added that the US will continue to work with these countries on security issues to remove them from the ban list.

Trump passed first visa ban in 2017

The United States will now abolish visas that allow citizens of Nigeria, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan and Myanmar to be eligible for permanent residency.

Citizens of Tanzania and Sudan will no longer be able to apply for “diversity visas”, which are issued to countries whose nationals are low in the United States.

By the way, Trump signed the ban for the first time seven days after he took over the Office of the President in January 2017, arguing that it is crucial to protecting Americans.

The first ban concerned the citizens of seven majority Muslim countries, but the list changed after several court proceedings. It now applies to the citizens of Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, Venezuela and North Korea. These bans apply to most citizens, but there are exceptions for students and those with “important contacts” in the United States.
