There were 57 Canadian nationals in the crashed Ukrainian plane in Iran

CANADIAN Foreign Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne has announced that the number of Canadian nationals killed in a Ukrainian plane crash in Iran is slightly lower than initially reported, and that it is 57 dead, and has announced assistance and support for the victims' families.

Champagne said in Ottawa on Friday that the Canadian government would set up an emergency force composed of senior government officials to help the families of victims killed Wednesday in the crash of a Ukrainian aircraft.

“According to the latest information at our disposal, we have determined that the death toll is not 63, but 57,” Champagne said, explaining that it was determined after examining the victims' travel documents.

The total number of casualties remains unchanged and there are 138 killed, he added.

According to the first information about the deaths from Ukrainian sources, there were 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 10 Swedes, four Afghans and three Britons. There were also 11 Ukrainians, nine of whom were crew members.

The Canadian Foreign Minister called the current situation regarding the aircraft and the investigation into the cause of the accident “very fluid”.

Champagne also said he learned from the contacts that some remnants of a plane crashed in Iran had been moved to the hangar. He also confirmed that Iran has so far issued only two visas to the dozen Canadian representatives expected in Iran. Other members of the Canadian team are currently based in Ankara. These are 10 consular officers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and two investigators from the Office for Transport Security.

According to the Canadian Foreign Minister, the priority is to provide support to the victims' families while considering all options that entail.

He also said that Canada, along with Britain, Ukraine, Sweden and Afghanistan, has formed a coordination group to assist the families of the victims.
