Turkish and Russian forces begin joint patrols in Syria

TURKEY and Russian troops began joint patrols in northeastern Syria on Friday, in accordance with an agreement reached by Ankara and Moscow last week.

Joint patrols with “land and air units” operate east of the border city of Al-Darbasiyah, the Turkish defense ministry announced on Twitter, as confirmed by the Russian defense ministry.

The patrol convoy consists of several armored vehicles, including the Russian BTR-82 and the Tigr and Typhon armored vehicles, as well as the Turkish Kirpi vehicle, the Russian ministry said in a statement.

Those forces are patrolling an area greater than 110 kilometers, the statement added.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), in which the Kurdish YPG plays a major role, have confirmed to the DPA that Russian-Turkish forces are patrolling the area.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian Vladimir Putin signed an agreement on joint control of the northern Syrian border area in Sochi on October 22, giving Kurdish militias 150 hours to withdraw.

Under the deal, Turkey will retain control of the area it occupied during the October 9 offensive against Syrian Kurds.

Turkey's defense ministry says another Russian delegation in Ankara will discuss with the Turkish side and the technical issues of the Sochi agreement on Friday.
