UN: The number of people on the verge of existence is record
HUMANITARIAN assistance will need a record 168 million people in 2020, or one person in 45 of them in the world, according to a UN report.
The number of people on the brink of existence has increased by 22 million since last year due to violent and protracted conflicts, climate change and extreme weather, and economic instability, according to the UN.
The UN plans to help 109 million of the most vulnerable in 55 countries
In an annual global humanitarian report, the UN and partner NGOs say they plan to help 109 million of the most vulnerable in 55 countries next year, which will require $ 29 billion.
“Today we have outlined a plan to help the most needy,” said UN relief coordinator Mark Lowcock in Geneva.
“But the plan will only work if everyone continues to play their part,” he noted.
War-ravaged Yemen is cited in the UN report as the world's largest humanitarian crisis, and aid needs remain “extremely high” in Syria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan.
