WHO chief: Introducing defensive measures, we must attack the coronavirus aggressively

The pandemic caused by coronavirus is accelerating, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Monday, with more than 300,000 cases infected worldwide and an infection confirmed in almost every country.

While it took 67 days from the first reported case to 100,000 Covid-19 cases, it only took 11 days for the next hundred thousand cases, and then only 4 days for so many more, explained World Health Organization Leader Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

“But we are not statistics prisoners. We are not helpless observers. We can change the trajectory of the pandemic,” Tedros said in an online briefing with more than 300 journalists.

He says we must attack the virus aggressively

He called for a global commitment to change the trajectory of the pandemic, and called on countries to adopt measures of attack and defense at the same time.

“Asking people to stay home and implement other measures of social distance is an important way of slowing the spread of the virus and buying time. These are defensive measures,” he said.

“In order to win, we must attack the virus with aggressive and targeted tactics – test every suspicious case, isolate, take care of every confirmed case, and find and isolate every close contact,” he explained.

Asked about the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Mike Ryan, the head of WHO's emergency program, said he believed the decision would be made very soon.

Australia and Canada have already announced that they are withdrawing from the Games, and organizers are under increasing pressure to postpone the Olympics, for the first time in 124 years of their modern history.

“I believe the decision will be made very soon,” Ryan said.

He explained that a decision on a possible delay would be made by Japan and the International Olympic Committee, adding: “We are confident that the Japanese government and the International Olympic Committee will not decide to hold the Games if they are dangerous to athletes or spectators.”
