WHO chief's address on the fight against the Crown: I have a simple message for all countries

TEST, test every suspicious case, World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Monday, criticizing countries for not testing enough residents but focusing on contact avoidance measures.

“We have a simple message for all countries: test, test, test,” the WHO leader said at a Geneva media conference.

Although schools are closed and events canceled, there is not enough effort to increase testing, isolate new cases and find their contacts, Tedros said, describing those measures as “the backbone of the Covid-19 response.”

Countries will not be able to fight a pandemic if they do not know who is infected and who is not, Tedros warned.

“You can't fight a fire with a blindfold,” he said.

The WHO director also warned that it was risky for patients with mild symptoms to recover at home instead of in hospitals or new makeshift medical facilities.

“Care for infected people at home can endanger other household members,” he said.

People who care for the sick at home should wear masks and wash their hands after every contact with them.

They should also sleep in separate rooms and use a separate bathroom, WHO recommends.
