WHO is deciding today on a state of emergency due to coronaviruses

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that it will today decide to declare an international emergency due to a coronavirus that has emerged in China.

If the WHO declares this virus a threat on an international scale today, it will be only the sixth time in the last decade that the organization has declared an international emergency.

A new strain has emerged

Symptoms of the disease include fever, cough and difficulty breathing.

“I take the decision very seriously,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said after a meeting of experts from the organization yesterday in Geneva.

He added that he was ready to make the decision only after due consideration and the amount of information.

A new coronavirus strain appeared in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December, and the case of the virus, with the exception of the Philippines and Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong and Macau, has already been reported in the United States.

Wuhan under lockout

Wuhan is closing its public transportation network and city officials have advised citizens not to leave the city, Chinese state media reported.

Passengers from China began screening at three airports in the United States last week, and reviews at two more airports will be introduced this week.

Authorities in Taiwan and the Philippines, as well as Thailand, Hong Kong and South Korea, said they would quarantine or look for symptoms from travelers from China.

The United Kingdom has announced that it will step up the surveillance of all passengers arriving by direct flights from the province and will extend the measure to other Chinese cities if necessary.

Serbia has announced that it will check all passengers arriving at Belgrade's airport with a thermal camera and is ready to quarantine anyone suspected of being infected with a coronavirus.

Thousands of Chinese nationals live in Serbia, and more than 100,000 Chinese tourists visited the country in 2019.
