Zelensky visited the Ukrainian frontline ahead of a meeting with Putin

UKRAINIAN President Volodymyr Zelenskij toured the eastern front, three days before his first meeting with Vladimir Putin, at which he would resume peace talks.

The Paris-French-German meeting takes place after a three-year stalemate in top-level negotiations.

All eyes are on Volodymyr Zelensky, a former actor and man with no political experience, who was elected Ukrainian president in May and will face off with political veteran Vladimir Putin.

Although no one expects a move to be made on Monday, negotiations continue to be seen with hope as French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel vigorously committed to reviving the Minsk peace treaty signed some five years ago.

The task will be difficult for Zelensky, pressed between promising not to “capitulate” to Moscow and a desire to end the conflict quickly.

Zelensky's predecessor tells him that “Putin should never be trusted”

His opponents warned him against accepting major concessions. And his predecessor, Petro Poroshenko, told him that “Putin should never be trusted.”

Volodymyr Zelenskij paid a visit to the soldiers on the battlefield on Friday. “It's easier to negotiate when I feel your strength and support,” he said in Reverend Jar, dressed in a camouflage suit.

Earlier in the week, he estimated that organizing the talks was the “first victory” in the war between Kiev and the pro-Russian separatists, in which 13,000 people had died in more than five years.

The West and Ukraine accuse Moscow of financing and arming the rebels, which Russia denies, saying it has a political-humanitarian role in protecting the local population.

Although the Minsk treaty put an end to the armed conflict, no political progress has been made.

Volodymyr Zelenskij said he wanted the Paris talks to focus on three issues: a new exchange of prisoners, implementation of lasting peace and the dissolution of all “illegal” armed groups in the Ukrainian territory.

The meeting will be an opportunity for the French president to assess the prospects for his plan to revive Russian-European ties, which almost died out after Russia's annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014, after which a conflict broke out in eastern Ukraine.

Russian gas deliveries to Europe via Ukraine could also be touched on to prevent delivery being suspended for Christmas and New Year.
